Chapter 14

Galbraith

Honestly, Keir had almost bailed when he’d seen Quint march past the alleyway. The man possessed a tedious attention to detail, and would no doubt come directly to the aid of a wayward aristocrat. Cleo hadn’t been in any danger, but dear God, that look she’d sent him when he’d ducked around the corner was a killer. She’d thought he was abandoning her.

He’d stayed hidden, but remained in her line of vision, and she’d surprised the hell out of him. Quickly taking note of his cautionary gesture and body language, Cleopatra put on a brilliant show to keep his location a secret through Quint’s nosy questioning. Except not all of it was a show. Sorrow had threaded through her voice at the mention of his nonexistent family.

Arm in arm, they’d walked away, clearly comfortable with each other. Enough to make him wonder what Quint was to her. Damn, what a horrible thought, especially when Keir didn’t even know what he was to Cleo.

Keir scrubbed his hands over his face, pushed his hair back. He couldn’t do this, not here, not now. Thinking about Cleo was the one sure way for him to miss what he’d come down here to find.

Inching closer to the bustling corridor, Keir clung to the shadows, scrutinizing each passing merchant for a second or two before dismissing them entirely. He knew most of these people. An unfamiliar face or anyone with an ounce of hesitation in his or her movements would be a blaring abnormality pointing him toward a threat.

Nothing. He’d been here for long hours after Cleo had left. Merchants tended to work late into the night when many others had already wound down for the day, or even slept. They didn’t just get through the job or perform a trade. It was a community. A family.

None of them had acted strangely or raised his suspicions, and the night would soon end. Anytime now they’d shut down their shops. His chance of catching a traitor tonight ended when their doors closed. A no show suited him just fine. He was due to take over for Wolfe.

Slipping into Spirit, he kept clear of people as he headed for the elevator. Inside, he took form long enough to press the button that would land the elevator right outside the dining hall. Keir floated along in Spirit, unable to feel the movement of the elevator.

The deceitful trick had taken him years to perfect. In fact, he was damn good at thriving in Spirit. He’d never come across his equal. So why had he refused to meet Cleo? He certainly could have managed a secret meeting or two. At the first sign of discovery, he could simply disappear into Spirit. Instead he’d crushed her heart.

The elevator doors slid open and Arianne stepped in, not bothering to send her captain a simple good-bye or verify that Keir stood invisible at her back and ready to take up guard. Such trust. Never once had she doubted he would be there for her.
